Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) is a statutory body that regulates and licenses broadcasting services in Zimbabwe. It was established by the Broadcasting Services Act Chapter [12:06] in 2001.

The BAZ is responsible for planning and managing the allocation and distribution of the broadcasting frequency spectrum, setting the standards for broadcasting equipment and content, and monitoring and investigating cases of interference or illegal broadcasting. The BAZ falls under the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and is headed by a twelve-member board.

To create an environment that promotes the development of a local dynamic broadcasting industry, which provides quality services, that are universally available and affordable, to effectively manage the licensing process and the broadcasting frequency spectrum to safeguard public interest and national sovereignty, and to ensure compliance with the law as well as international telecommunications and broadcasting treaties to which Zimbabwe is a signatory.

2000

BAZ Established

The Authority was established by the Broadcasting Services Act Chapter [12:06]

2001

First License Issued

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) was licensed, operating 4 radio stations and 1 television station.

2012

First Commercial Radio Licensing

BAZ granted licenses to two private companies, AB Communications and Zimpapers, which operate two radio stations each, ZiFM Stereo, and Star FM, respectively.

2008

Digital Terrestrial Television

BAZ initiated Zimbabwe's migration from analogue to digital terrestrial television broadcasting.

2010

First Commercial Television

Licensing of first commercial television broadcasters to diversify Zimbabwe's media landscape.

2015

CRS and Campus Radio Stations

Introduction of Community Radio Stations and Campus Radio licensing to promote local content and youth engagement.

2020

Digital Migration Milestone

Significant progress in nationwide digital broadcasting migration and infrastructure development.

2022

Regional Connectivity

Enhanced regional broadcasting cooperation and international standards alignment.
